This course is designed for graduate students (in psychology) and licensed mental health professionals.


In this course, the instructor will demonstrate specific skills and principles related to individual therapy and assessment. Skills and principles demonstrated will be aimed toward helping clients get beyond barriers to accessing and integrating buried emotions.


This course will utilize video recorded session material to demonstrate the efficacy of skills presented. These skills will be practiced through experiential exercises. Relevant research and current literature from the field of psychotherapy supporting theoretical concepts will be presented.

Course Outline:


10:00 - 11:00 Lecture: In-the-moment experience of affect in psychotherapy is a curative factor


11:00 - 12:30 Video Analysis with Q & A: Working with toxic forms of shame, anxiety and guilt

1. Raising awareness of toxic forms of shame, anxiety and guilt

2. Conveying compassion for the cost of self-protective strategies

3. Leveraging the client's will to overcome barriers to feeling


12:30 - 1:00 Break (30 mins)


1:00 – 1:45 Video Analysis with Q & A: Demonstrating addressing self-protective strategies (SPS) with shame sensitivity

1. Normalize SPS

2. Frame SPS as having been necessary to survival

3. Avoiding “you” statements when raising awareness of SPS


1:45 – 2:15 Experiential Practice: Addressing self-protective strategies with shame sensitivity

1. Practicing normalizing SPS

2. Practicing reframing SPS as necessary to survival

3. Practicing alternatives to “you” statements when raising awareness of SPS


2:15- 2:30 Final Q & A



Objectives:


At the end of this course attendees will be able to:

Susan Warren Warshow, LCSW, LMFT, is the founder of the Dynamic Emotion Focused Therapy (DEFT) Institute, which offers a monthly training program for psychotherapists and a webinar series. She is the author of A Therapist's Handbook to Dissolve Shame and Defense: Master the Moment. Her second book, Dynamic Emotion Focused Therapy: A Casebook on Shame Sensitivity, will also be released by Routledge. She is a Certified IEDTA Teacher/Supervisor and has published several articles in professional journals. She has a private practice treating individuals and couples and offers clinical supervision,


She has presented at conferences and workshops nationally and internationally (IEDTA, California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the Brief Therapy Conference, the LA County Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers). She has been a guest lecturer at several California universities and professional schools. Formerly, she was a supervisor and Coordinator of Continuing Education at the Department of Psychiatry at Northridge Hospital. She produced over 100 public presentations on child abuse and neglect in L.A. County and was media director for L.A.'s first child abuse hotline.




This course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; Course completion certificates will be awarded at the end of the event upon completion of the course evaluation.
